​This outdoor resource-event is of great significance to everyone interested in Native American Culture and features Native American Indian Jamie Oxendine a Lumbee author of “Southeastern Woodland Designs,” a book for adults and children.
 
“Jamie’s book has 23-pages of tribal patterns that can be used to create jewelry, paintings, tattoos and fabric designs, or as coloring book,” explained Sanctuary on the Trail Co-Founder and Lumbee Indian René Locklear White. “Jamie’s book will intrigue and captivate people of all ages and can serve as an important classroom teaching-aid. You will find Jamie’s book in the center of our suspended reading-room.”

The Indian Village and Fair is Sept. 18-19 10:00 am – 5:00 pm in the town of Bluemont. Directions: Enter off of Snickersville Turnpike (follow the signs on Rt. 734) in Bluemont, Va. 20135 (one hour west of D.C., 17 miles from Leesburg Va. and east of Winchester Va. on Rt. 7.) Fair general admission is only $10, children nine and under are free. Sorry, no pets. Free parking is available.

Hope On Hatterask is fundamentally a true story about three very different early nineteenth century characters who are brought together through an unlikely series of profound events in each of their lives. They are: Elijah, an adolescent orphaned Scotch Irish boy struggling to survive the port ghettos of Northern Ireland; Embato, a proud young West African warrior whose whole life is abruptly and dramatically altered forever by both fellow Africans and pale skinned intruders from lands an ocean

away; and a brave adolescent Eastern Coastal Native American woman who faces constant oppression and danger on a colonized continent that only two centuries earlier was occupied and controlled exclusively by her own people. The story takes place in the early 1800s and chronicles their lives from early adolescence through early young adulthood. Each character’s individual culture, ethnicity, spirituality, geography of origin, and ancestral history is explored in detail.

Beard was not only a witness to two major battles against the Lakota; he also traveled with William “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s Wild West show, worked as a Hollywood Indian, and witnessed the grand transformation of the Black Hills into a tourism mecca. Beard spent most of his later life fighting to reclaim his homeland and acting as “old Dewey Beard,” a living relic of the “old West” for the tourists.

Philip Burnham is a teacher and a free-lance journalist/historian based on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Burnham has published in American Heritage, The Washington Post, MHQ, Transition, Emerge, The Columbia Journalism Review, and Indian Country Today. He is currently a Term Assistant Professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, where he teaches beginning and advanced writing courses.
